Pull off the Road

The very first thing you want to do is pull off the road as far as you possibly can. If you are in traffic, get out of the car and walk to a safer location. If the car is on the shoulder of a highway, leave through the passenger door. There is always the chance that a disabled vehicle could be hit by another vehicle. Being away from traffic will keep you safe.

Increase Visibility

Make your car easy to see. Turn on your hazard lights and if you have flares or hazard triangles, set them out in front of and behind the vehicle. You could also tie a piece of fabric, like a shirt or a rag, to the antenna to make the car more visible.

Be Safe

It is extremely important that you are as cautious as possible. Lock your doors. Stay as far away from traffic as possible. If you are unsure of someone who stops to offer help, don’t accept their offer. Politely tell them that help is already on the way.

Always be Prepared

You never know when an emergency will arise. For that reason, it is always a wise idea to have a mobile phone and a charger with you. This way, if an emergency does arise, you will be able to easily call for help.
