The Pathfinder is Nissan's midsize crossover SUV, with three rows for passengers and a good 16 cubic feet to spare behind them for cargo. The 2017 Pathfinder has four trim levels, and the SL is the second most expensive with a starting MSRP of $36,100. While the model doesn't have as many features as the top-level Platinum, you may find that it offers all the things that are most important to you.
A New Engine
For 2017, Nissan refreshed the Pathfinder design, changing the exterior appearance in the front and rear and upgrading the engine. The new V6 power plant offers 284 horsepower, which is 24 ponies more than the 2016 model. This upgrade is very practical, too, since the new Pathfinder can tow up to 6,000 pounds, or 1,000 more than last year.
The All-Mode 4x4
The 2017 Pathfinder is available with a 4x4 drivetrain, which means you can switch between two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive manually, something you can't do an all-wheel drive system. However, if you'd like the Pathfinder to decide for itself where to send the engine torque, the All-Mode 4x4 Intuitive system lets you do that, too, thanks to a third "Auto" setting on the All-Mode dial.
A Motion-Activated Liftgate
Thanks to the popularity of keyless lock systems that unlock the doors as soon as they detect the key fob nearby, you no longer need to use your hands to open a liftgate. For the 2017 Pathfinder, the SL and Platinum trim levels come with a motion-activated liftgate which opens automatically if you have your key fob on you and you wave your foot under your rear bumper. This makes it easier to get in when your hands are full of groceries, suitcases, or whatever else you need to pack.
The Around View Monitor
Nissan's Around View Monitor is the next step when it comes to rearview monitors. Instead of letting you see immediately behind you, the Around View Monitor uses a set of four cameras to create a top-down view. That shows you exactly how close you are to the curb, cars, and anything else that might be around. The Around View Monitor can't parallel park for you, but it can certainly help.
The SL Premium Package
If the regular SL features aren't enough, you can pick up the SL Premium Package for $3,400 extra, which is still several thousand less than the Platinum trim. The SL Premium Package adds features like a dual-pane panoramic moonroof, a built-in navigation system, a subscription to SiriusXM Traffic, a Bose sound system with 13 speakers, and a tow hitch receiver. The 2017 Pathfinder is a compromise between the larger and more expensive full-size SUV and the smaller and cheaper two-seat crossover. The SL trim is a similar compromise between the top Platinum trim and the less expensive S and SV trims. For many SUV buyers, the Pathfinder SL is just the right combination of features and value on the market today.
